Create a Custom Field

  Currently, this feature is only available in the TestFirst Desktop App.
  The user must have Manage permission for Customizations. See Roles and Permissions for more details.

In order to create a custom field:

  1. Click on the Customizations item in the left menu panel. Custom Fields page will be displayed.
  2. Click the ADD CUSTOM FIELD button. Add Custom Field dialog will be displayed.
  3. Fill in the necessary details. Refer to the table below for the description of the fields in the Add Custom Field dialog.
  4. Once you're satisfied with the custom field details, click SAVE. The custom field will be saved and will appear in the custom field list.
Field Description
Name (required) The name of the field that will be shown in the UI when creating or editing the custom field object.
System Name (required)

A unique system name. The system name cannot have spaces and must be in lower case. 

  The system name cannot be changed later. Try to create a meaningful system name as it will have to stay the same even if you subsequently rename the field in the UI.
Description (optional) The description of the custom field.
Target Object (required)

Pick the suitable value from the dropdown. 

  Right now, the only available object is test case.
  Target object cannot be subsequently changed.
Type (required)

Pick a suitable value from the dropdown. The following options are available:

  • Integer
  • Checkbox
  • Dropdown
  • Multi-select
  • Single-line text
  • Multi-line text
  Once you select the type, the dialog window will expand showing additional options. Read about them below.
  The custom field type cannot be subsequently changed.

Default value

(required for mandatory fields)

The default value that will be displayed on all the test cases where the field value is not explicitly stated.

  The default value is applied to all previously created test cases. 
Suggested value

The value that is suggested when creating a new test case. One of:

  • suggest default value (default option)
  • do not suggest any value
  • custom value
Is Mandatory

If checked, the field will be mandatory when creating a new test case.
Is Active

If checked, the field will be available in the UI.
